How did you find out about SSJ?

I learned about SSJ through Haruka’s podcast and Mizuki’s Kotsu Kotsu Nihongo podcast. I had been listening to both of their shows for a long time, and when I found out that they were working together in the same group, I became very interested. I also use other learning platforms, but I chose SSJ mainly because the classes are small. There are usually only two or three students per session, which feels comfortable for someone shy like me. In large groups, I get too nervous to say anything.

What do you find difficult about learning Japanese?

Honestly, everything is difficult — grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation — none of it is easy. But the hardest part is putting learned words together naturally when speaking. During conversations, I have to respond quickly, which makes me nervous. I think this ability to combine words smoothly depends more on language sense than on grammar. Understanding how native speakers use Japanese naturally is very important. To be honest, in my first SSJ class, I felt discouraged because other members spoke so well.

But as I kept attending, I gradually became more confident and able to speak better. I’m really glad I didn’t give up and continued.

How is the atmosphere at SSJ?

It’s very good. Both the teachers and students are polite and kind.

Even when opinions differ, no one denies others — it’s a safe and comfortable place to talk. There are people from many countries, and I enjoy meeting different members each time. Recently, I even met a member in person who came to Tokyo for a trip. Their Japanese was very good, and it motivated me a lot. I’m really happy that I’ve made real friends through SSJ.

What do you like about group lessons?

I enjoy that there’s a new topic every lesson — it makes me excited to see who I’ll talk with next time. We also do role-plays sometimes.Playing the role of a store clerk was challenging, but it was great practice for using polite Japanese.

What are your future goals?

In the short term, I want to be able to handle everyday situations smoothly in Japanese. I still get nervous when I have to call the city office or ask complex questions over the phone. That’s why I want to practice through phone role-plays and become more confident speaking Japanese.

Message to people interested in SSJ

I think SSJ is probably one of the most approachable Japanese programs out there. But for me, SSJ is not just a language school — it’s a community connected through Japanese. It’s more like a place where I can belong, not just study. Besides lessons, there are club activities and events — you can read books, play games, listen to music, and chat. Because of these opportunities, I can keep learning while having fun!
