【だます】to trick / deceive
① 友だちをだますつもりはありませんでした。
I didn’t mean to trick my friend.
② 彼にだまされて、お金を払ってしまいました。
I was tricked by him and ended up paying money.
【ばれる】to be found out / be exposed
① 宿題をしていないことが先生にばれました。
The teacher found out that I didn’t do my homework.
② うそはすぐにばれますよ。
Lies are quickly found out.
【ばればれ】obvious / totally obvious
① そのうそ、ばればれだよ。
That lie is totally obvious.
② かくしているつもりでも、態度でばればれです。
Even if you try to hide it, it’s totally obvious from your attitude.
【あやしい】suspicious / doubtful
① あの人の話はちょっとあやしいですね。
His story sounds a bit suspicious.
② 夜にあやしい人がうろうろしていました。
A suspicious person was wandering around at night.
【お世辞（せじ）】flattery / insincere compliment
① それはお世辞ですよ。本当はそんなに上手じゃありません。
That’s just flattery. I’m not really that good.

He always gives insincere compliments.
【腹（はら）を割（わ）る】to speak frankly / open up
① 今日は腹を割って話しましょう。
Let’s talk honestly today.
② けんかのあと、友だちと腹を割って話し合って、誤解が解けました。
After our fight, we talked honestly and cleared up the misunderstanding.
中・上級
【開（ひら）き直（なお）る】to brazen it out / to justify oneself shamelessly
① ミスを注意されたのに、彼は謝らずに開き直りました。
Even after being warned about his mistake, he didn’t apologize and brazened it out.
② 失敗したなら、開き直るのではなく、素直に謝ったほうがいいと思います。
If you fail, it’s better to apologize honestly than act defiant.
【〜ぶる】to pretend to be / act like
①分からないのに知ったかぶりをして説明したので、あとで間違いだとばれてしまいました。
He explained things pretending to know, even though he didn’t, and later it was exposed as wrong.
② 大人ぶって強がっているけど、本当は不安なんだと思います。
He pretends to be mature and strong, but I think he’s actually anxious.
【ごまかす】to dodge / cover up / gloss over
① 質問にちゃんと答えずに、話題を変えてごまかしました。
He changed the topic to dodge the question.
② 間違いをそのままごまかしても、いつかばれますよ。
If you cover up your mistakes, they’ll be found out someday.
【見抜（みぬ）く】to see through / detect
① 先生は私たちのうそをすぐに見抜きました。
The teacher quickly saw through our lie.
② 彼女は人の気持ちを見抜くのが本当に上手です。
She’s really good at reading people’s feelings.
【猫（ねこ）を被（かぶ）る】to pretend to be innocent / hide one’s true self
① 彼は初対面では猫をかぶっていますが、仲良くなるとよくしゃべります。
He acts quiet at first, but talks a lot once you get to know him.
② いつまでも猫をかぶっていないで、本音で話してほしいです。
I want you to stop pretending and speak honestly.
