例文① 電車が混んでいたので、お年寄りに席を譲りました。I gave up my seat to an elderly person because the train was crowded.

例文② レジに並んでいたら、後ろの人が商品を1つしか持っていなかったので、順番を譲りました。I was waiting in line at the register, but the person behind me only had one item, so I let them go ahead of me.

【貢献する（こうけんする）】to contribute

例文① 地域に貢献したくて、月に1回、近所の清掃活動に参加しています。I participate in a neighborhood cleanup once a month because I want to contribute to the local community.

例文② 大きなことはできなくても、自分にできることで社会に貢献したいです。Even if I can't do anything big, I want to contribute to society in whatever way I can.

【一日一善（いちにちいちぜん）】doing one good deed a day

例文① 「一日一善」を意識して、困っている人を見かけたら声をかけるようにしています。I try to do one good deed a day, so when I see someone who needs help, I try to talk to them.

例文② 一日一善って言っても、そんなに特別なことをしなくてもいいと思います。I don't think doing one good deed a day has to mean doing anything particularly special.

【おせっかい】being overly helpful / meddling

例文① 母は何でも手伝おうとするので、たまに「ちょっとおせっかいだな」と思うことがあります。My mother tries to help me with everything, so sometimes I feel like she's being a little too helpful.

例文② いいと思ってアドバイスしたけど、相手にはおせっかいだったかもしれません。I gave them advice because I thought it would help, but maybe they felt I was meddling.

【自己満足（じこまんぞく）】self-satisfaction

例文① 誰にも気づかれなかったけど、道に落ちていたゴミを拾いました。まあ、自己満足ですけどね。No one noticed, but I picked up some trash on the street. Well, I guess I just did it for my own satisfaction.

例文② 「人のためにやってる」と言ってるけど、本当は自己満足なんじゃない？You say you're doing it for other people, but aren't you really doing it for your own satisfaction?

【さりげない】subtle / thoughtful without making a show of it

例文① 私が仕事で落ち込んでいたとき、同僚が何も聞かずにコーヒーを買ってきてくれました。ああいうさりげない優しさって、うれしいですよね。When I was feeling down about work, my coworker brought me a coffee without asking any questions. That kind of subtle kindness really means a lot.

例文② 重そうな荷物を持っていたら、後ろの人がさりげなくドアを押さえてくれました。When I was carrying some heavy bags, the person behind me casually held the door open for me.

【見返り（みかえり）】something in return / reward

例文① 親切にしたのにお礼を言ってもらえなくて少しモヤモヤしました。自分でも気づかないうちに、見返りを求めていたのかもしれません。I felt a little bothered when they didn't thank me for helping them. Maybe I was expecting something in return without realizing it.

例文② 本当に親切な人って、見返りを求めずに人のために行動できる人なのかな。I wonder if a truly kind person is someone who can do things for others without expecting anything in return.

【偽善（ぎぜん）】hypocrisy / insincere goodness

例文① 「SNSにボランティアの写真を載せるのは偽善だ」と言う人もいるけど、実際に誰かの役に立っているなら、それでもいいんじゃないかな。Some people say posting photos of volunteer work on social media is hypocritical, but if it's actually helping someone, maybe that's still a good thing.

例文② 人に褒められたいという気持ちが少しあるだけで、偽善だと決めつけるのは違うと思います。I don't think it's fair to call someone's actions hypocritical just because part of them wants to be praised.

【損得勘定（そんとくかんじょう）】calculating personal gain and loss

例文① 「この人と仲良くしておけば仕事で得するかも」みたいに、何でも損得勘定で考える人はちょっと苦手です。I'm not very comfortable with people who calculate everything in terms of personal gain, like thinking, “It might benefit my career if I stay on good terms with this person.”

例文② 親切にするかどうかまで損得勘定で決めるようになったら、ちょっと寂しい気がします。I think it would be a little sad if we started deciding whether to be kind based on what we might gain or lose.

【一日一善（いちにちいちぜん）】doing one good deed a day

例文① 友達が「一日一善」を心がけていて、ゴミが落ちていたら拾ったり、困っている人がいたら声をかけたりしているそうです。A friend of mine tries to do one good deed a day, like picking up litter or offering help when someone seems to be in trouble.

例文② 一日一善って聞くと大げさに感じるけど、ドアを押さえてあげるとか、そのくらいのことでいいんだと思います。“Doing one good deed a day” might sound like a big commitment, but I think it can be something as simple as holding the door open for someone.
