【つぶれる】go out of business / close down

例文① 近所のパン屋さん、来月つぶれるらしいよ。The bakery near my house is apparently going out of business next month.

例文② この店、いつもお客さんが少ないけど、つぶれないか心配だね。This place never has many customers. I’m worried it might go out of business.


【こだわる】be particular about / care a lot about

例文① 私は毎日飲むから、コーヒー豆にはちょっとこだわっています。I drink coffee every day, so I’m pretty particular about the beans I buy.

例文② 安い服でもいいけど、靴は履きやすさにこだわりたいです。I don’t mind cheap clothes, but I care about comfort when it comes to shoes.


【物価(ぶっか)】prices / cost of living

例文① 最近、物価が上がって、スーパーで買い物をすると前より高く感じます。Prices have gone up recently, so grocery shopping feels more expensive than before.

例文② この国は給料が高いけど、物価も高いです。Salaries are high in this country, but so is the cost of living.


【赤字(あかじ)】loss / deficit

例文① お客さんが減って、この店はずっと赤字だったそうです。Apparently, this shop had been losing money for a long time because it had fewer customers.

例文② 売り上げより家賃や材料費のほうが高かったら、赤字になります。If rent and ingredient costs are higher than sales, the business will lose money.


【利益(りえき)】profit

例文① たくさん売れても、材料費が高いと利益はあまり出ません。Even if you sell a lot, you won’t make much profit if material costs are high.

例文② この商品は値段が安すぎて、ほとんど利益が出ないそうです。Apparently, this product is so cheap that they barely make any profit from it.

【見合う(みあう)】be worth / be commensurate with

例文① 少し高くても、品質に見合った値段なら払ってもいいと思います。Even if it’s a little expensive, I don’t mind paying if the price matches the quality.

例文② 給料が仕事の大変さに見合っていないと感じて、転職を考え始めました。I started thinking about changing jobs because I felt my salary didn’t match how demanding the work was.


【採算が取れる(さいさんがとれる)】be profitable / make financial sense

例文① 材料費が上がって、今の値段では採算が取れなくなったそうです。Apparently, rising ingredient costs have made it impossible to turn a profit at the current prices.

例文② お客さんが増えても、値段が安すぎると採算が取れないことがあります。Even if you get more customers, you may not make a profit if your prices are too low.


【圧迫する(あっぱくする)】put pressure on / strain

例文① 食品や電気代の値上げが家計を圧迫しています。Rising food and electricity prices are putting pressure on household budgets.

例文② 家賃が高すぎると、お店の経営を圧迫する原因になります。If the rent is too high, it can put financial pressure on a business.


【抑える(おさえる)】keep down / reduce / control

例文① 最近は外食を減らして、食費を抑えるようにしています。Recently, I’ve been eating out less to keep my food expenses down.

例文② お店もできるだけ値上げを抑えようとしていると思います。I think businesses are also trying to keep price increases to a minimum.


【付加価値(ふかかち)】added value例文① 値段だけで勝負するのではなく、その店にしかない付加価値が必要だと思います。Rather than competing on price alone, I think businesses need to offer added value that customers can’t get elsewhere.

例文② 商品のストーリーや丁寧なサービスも、付加価値の一つになると思います。I think the story behind a product and attentive service can also add value.
