【失敗(しっぱい)は成功(せいこう)のもと】Failure is the mother of success.意味: 失敗しても、そこから学べば、次の成功につながるという意味です。
例文① 試験に落ちたけど、失敗は成功のもとだと思って、もう一度勉強します。I failed the exam, but I’ll think of it as a learning experience and study again.
例文② 料理、失敗しちゃった。でも、失敗は成功のもとだよ。次はきっとうまくできるよ。I messed up the cooking. But you learn from your mistakes. I’m sure it’ll go better next time.
【習(なら)うより慣(な)れよ】Practice is the best teacher.
意味: 人から教えてもらうだけではなく、実際に何度もやって慣れることが大切だという意味です。
例文① 日本語は、文法を勉強するだけじゃなくて、実際に話すことも大切です。習うより慣れよですね。With Japanese, it’s important not only to study grammar but also to actually speak it. Practice is the best teacher.
例文② 最初はレジの仕事が大変だったけど、毎日やっていたら慣れました。やっぱり習うより慣れよですね。Working the register was difficult at first, but I got used to it by doing it every day. Practice really is the best teacher.
【笑(わら)う門(かど)には福(ふく)来(きた)る】Good fortune comes to those who smile.
意味: いつも明るく笑っている人や家には、いいことがやってくるという意味です。
例文① 最近ちょっと嫌なことが多いけど、「笑う門には福来る」っていうし、なるべく明るく過ごしたいです。A lot of unpleasant things have happened lately, but they say good fortune comes to those who smile, so I want to stay positive.
例文② おばあちゃんはいつも「笑う門には福来る」って言って、家族を笑わせてくれます。My grandma always says, “Good fortune comes to those who smile,” and makes the whole family laugh.
【急(いそ)がば回(まわ)れ】Haste makes waste. / More haste, less speed.
意味: 急いでいるときほど、危ない方法や近道ではなく、時間がかかっても確実な方法を選んだほうがいいという意味です。
例文① 急いでるけど、この道は渋滞するかもしれないよ。急がば回れで、いつもの道から行こう。We’re in a hurry, but this road might be congested. Better safe than sorry—let’s take our usual route.
例文② 早く上手になりたいけど、急がば回れで、まずは基本からしっかり練習することにしました。I want to improve quickly, but I decided it’s better not to rush and to start by practicing the basics properly.
【残(のこ)り物(もの)には福(ふく)がある】Good things come to those who wait.
意味: 最後まで残っているものの中に、意外といいものがあるという意味です。
例文① みんなが選んだあとに残ったケーキをもらったら、一番好きなチョコ味でした。残り物には福があるね。I took the piece of cake left after everyone else chose, and it was my favorite—chocolate. Sometimes the best is saved for last.
例文② セールの最終日に行ったら、欲しかった服が1枚だけ残っていました。残り物には福があるなと思いました。I went on the last day of the sale, and there was just one of the shirts I wanted left. I thought, “Sometimes the best is saved for last.”
中級・上級
【塵(ちり)も積(つ)もれば山(やま)となる】Many a little makes a mickle. / Small things add up.
意味: とても小さなことでも、長い間積み重ねれば、大きな結果になるという意味です。
例文① 毎日10分しか勉強できなくても、1年続ければかなりの時間になります。塵も積もれば山となるですね。Even if you can only study for ten minutes a day, it adds up to a significant amount over a year. Small things add up.
例文② 毎月少しずつ貯金していたら、いつの間にか旅行に行けるくらい貯まっていました。まさに塵も積もれば山となるですね。I saved a little money every month, and before I knew it, I had enough for a trip. Little by little really adds up.
【類(るい)は友(とも)を呼(よ)ぶ】Birds of a feather flock together.
意味: 性格や考え方、趣味などが似ている人は、自然と仲良くなりやすいという意味です。
例文① 私の友達はみんな旅行が好きなんです。類は友を呼ぶって本当ですね。All of my friends love traveling. I guess birds of a feather really do flock together.
例文② あの2人、好きな音楽も服の趣味も似てるよね。やっぱり類は友を呼ぶのかな。Those two have similar tastes in music and clothes, don’t they? I guess birds of a feather flock together.
【口(くち)は災(わざわ)いのもと】Loose lips sink ships. / Watch what you say.
意味: よく考えずに言ったことが原因で、トラブルになったり、自分が困ったりすることがあるので、発言には気をつけたほうがいいという意味です。
例文① 友達から聞いた秘密をうっかり話したら、本人に知られてしまいました。口は災いのもとですね。I accidentally told someone a secret I had heard from a friend, and the person found out. I really should have watched what I said.
例文② SNSでは、軽い気持ちで書いたことが大きな問題になることもあります。口は災いのもとというのは、ネットでも同じですね。On social media, something you post without much thought can turn into a big problem. “Watch what you say” applies online too.
【雨降(あめふ)って地固(じかた)まる】After a storm comes a calm. / Adversity can strengthen relationships.
意味: ケンカやトラブルなど悪いことがあったあと、それを乗り越えることで、前よりも関係や状況がよくなるという意味です。
例文① 彼とは大ゲンカしたけど、本音で話したことで前より仲良くなりました。雨降って地固まるってこういうことですね。I had a huge fight with him, but talking honestly brought us closer than before. I guess adversity can strengthen a relationship.
例文② チーム内で意見がぶつかったけど、話し合ったことで役割がはっきりしました。雨降って地固まるですね。There was a disagreement within the team, but discussing it helped clarify everyone’s roles. Sometimes conflict makes a team stronger.
【出(で)る杭(くい)は打(う)たれる】The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.
意味: 周りより目立ったり、違うことをしたりすると、批判されたり、周りから抑えられたりすることがあるという意味です。
例文① 新しいやり方を提案したら、「今までどおりでいい」と反対されました。出る杭は打たれるってこういうことなのかな。I suggested a new way of doing things, but people opposed it and said we should keep doing things the way we always have. Maybe this is what they mean by “the nail that sticks out gets hammered down.”
例文② 日本では「出る杭は打たれる」と言いますが、目立つことを恐れて自分の意見を言わないのもよくないと思います。In Japan, there’s a saying that “the nail that sticks out gets hammered down,” but I don’t think it’s good to be afraid of standing out and avoid expressing your opinion.
