【素直(すなお)】honest / straightforward

例文① 褒められたときは、素直に「ありがとう」と言ったほうがいいと思います。When someone compliments you, I think it’s better to simply say “thank you.”

例文② 彼は素直な人なので、自分が悪かったときはすぐに謝ります。He is an honest person, so he apologizes right away when he knows he was wrong.


【評価(ひょうか)】evaluation / assessment

例文① 仕事で頑張ったところを上司に評価されて、うれしかったです。I was happy that my boss recognized the effort I put into my work.

例文② 人からの評価を気にしすぎると、疲れてしまいます。If you worry too much about how others evaluate you, it can be exhausting.


【お世辞(おせじ)】flattery / compliment said to be polite

例文① 「若く見えますね」と言われたけど、お世辞かもしれません。Someone told me I look young, but they might have just been flattering me.

例文② 本当にそう思ってる?お世辞じゃない?Do you really mean that? You’re not just saying that to be nice, are you?


【比較する(ひかくする)】to compare

例文① SNSを見て、自分と他の人を比較して落ち込むことがあります。Sometimes I look at social media, compare myself to other people, and feel down.

例文② 兄弟を比較するのは、あまりよくないと思います。I don’t think it’s good to compare siblings.


【照れる(てれる)】to feel shy / embarrassed

例文① みんなの前で褒められると、ちょっと照れます。I get a little embarrassed when someone compliments me in front of everyone.

例文② 「今日の服、似合ってるね」と言ったら、彼は照れていました。When I told him, “That outfit looks good on you today,” he got shy.


【お世辞(おせじ)】flattery / compliment said to be polite

例文① あの人は誰にでも「すごいですね」と言うから、褒められてもお世辞に聞こえてしまいます。He tells everyone, “That’s amazing,” so even when he compliments me, it just sounds like flattery.

例文② お世辞だと分かっていても、褒められるとうれしいものです。Even when you know it’s just flattery, it still feels good to be complimented.


【照れる(てれる)】to feel shy / embarrassed

例文① みんなの前で褒められると照れるので、できれば個人的に言ってほしいです。I get embarrassed when I’m praised in front of everyone, so I’d rather be told privately.

例文② 普段あまり褒めてくれない夫に「今日の服、似合ってるね」と言われて、ちょっと照れました。My husband doesn’t compliment me very often, so I got a little shy when he said, “That outfit looks good on you today.”


【謙遜する(けんそんする)】to be modest / to downplay oneself

例文① 日本では、褒められたときに「いえいえ、全然です」と謙遜する人が多いです。In Japan, many people respond modestly to compliments by saying things like, “Oh, not at all.”

例文② 謙遜しすぎると、せっかく褒めてくれた相手を困らせてしまうこともあります。If you’re too modest, you may end up making the person who complimented you feel awkward.


【嫉妬する(しっとする)】to be jealous / envious

例文① 友達の成功を素直に喜びたいのに、つい嫉妬してしまうことがあります。Sometimes I want to be genuinely happy for my friend’s success, but I can’t help feeling jealous.

例文② SNSで活躍している人を見ると、自分と比べて嫉妬してしまうことがあります。When I see people doing well on social media, I sometimes compare myself to them and feel jealous.


【真に受ける(まにうける)】to take something seriously / at face value

例文① あの人は誰にでも褒め言葉を言うから、全部真に受けないほうがいいですよ。That person compliments everyone, so you probably shouldn’t take everything they say at face value.

例文② 「絶対モデルになれるよ」と言われたけど、お世辞かもしれないので真に受けていません。Someone told me, “You could definitely be a model,” but it might just be flattery, so I’m not taking it too seriously.
